What Does The NHS Say About Acupressure?

The NHS suggests that acupressure may help reduce nausea and vomiting and can play a useful role in treating Morning Sickness and various other nausea related issues.

Acupressure shares the same principles of acupuncture; acupuncture is a treatment derived from ancient Chinese medicine. Fine needles are inserted at certain sites in the body for therapeutic or preventative purposes. This results in the body producing natural substances, such as pain-relieving endorphins. It's likely these naturally released substances are responsible for the beneficial effects experienced with acupuncture. Acupuncture is often seen as a form of complimentary or alternative medicine (CAM).

Similar to acupuncture, our acupressure wristbands involve wearing bands on the wrist which apply pressure to the Nei-Kuan point which is believed to be effective in reducing symptoms of nausea in pregnancy and other nausea related issues.

What is Morning Sickness?

Pregnancy sickness affects more women than you might think, with 80% suffering with symptoms.

Pregnancy can be a positive, life-altering process, but for some women pregnancy sickness can take away from the fun and enjoyment. The most common symptoms associated with morning sickness are nausea and vomiting. It’s not ideal, especially when you are coming to terms with your changing body and a cocktail of hormones. It is believed morning sickness is caused by hormones? The key culprit is human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone found during pregnancy and the levels are highest in the end of your first trimester which gradually go down over the rest of your pregnancy.

Some women unfortunately suffer from something called Hyperemesis Gravidarum, which causes severe nausea that requires medical assistance.

WHAT IS TRAVEL SICKNESS?

Motion sickness is when the brain can't make sense of information sent from your eyes, ears and body. We rely on our senses to keep our balance and compute the environmental landscape, especially our eyes and ears. The inner ear in particular, helps control your sense of balance. As it holds fluid which communicates to the brain if you are upside down etc. but if you are in a car or on a boat the motion is causing the fluid in the ears to move, sending mixed messages to the brain then the eyes are communicating another message and the brain becomes confused causing the feelings of nausea and vomiting. Basically it's not a nice feeling and can really affect your travels and daily tasks, don’t worry as we have plenty of products you can try.

ANTI-MORNING SICKNESS TIPS

Morning sickness can be tiring and more than an inconvenience.

These self-care tips can help control and alleviate symptoms:

  • Sleep & rest: Your body is going through a lot of changes and morning sickness is a side effect of that, listening to your body and knowing when to rest is a good way to alleviate feelings of nausea
  • Track your nausea: Knowing when you most experience feelings of nausea / vomiting will allow you to prepare efficiently for your day. Sometimes there are triggers you may notice that amplify your symptoms e.g. certain smells / foods - which is good know so you can avoid
  • Eat foods that are dry: Certain foods like crackers and toast help alleviate symptoms of nausea as they don’t have strong flavours and absorb stomach acid. Also eat "little and often" is a good approach
