What does the NHS about Postpartum?

There are many parts of the body that need time to recover after childbirth. You may have had stitches, are experiencing heavy bleeding or are having bladder problems. It is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle with light exercise and making sure your body is getting enough nutrients but without pushing yourself too far.  As well as physical recovery, your mental well-being will need to some care as well. Hormonal changes within the body cause heightened emotions and tiredness within the first few weeks postpartum.

What is postpartum?

The period just after delivery, postpartum refers to the mother. This is a time when your body begins to heal and adjust to not being pregnant. This experience is unique to every woman but most women will feel sore initially and very tired for several weeks after. Due to levels of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone being so high during pregnancy, postpartum recovery is an emotional period that can lead to feelings of anxiety or depression. This is a common experience after giving birth however if these feel overwhelming reach out to your GP

Self-Care Advice

After birth of course your attention is primarily going to be on your new baby, however it is beneficial for not only you but also your newborn to take time for some self care and make sure your body is recovering properly.

  • Adhere to your doctors orders. Attend all follow up appointments and try and take things easy, they want you to recover as quickly and as best as possible.
  • Rest. Wherever possible try and catch up on sleep.
  • Accept help from family and friends. Looking after a new born whilst looking after yourself is a mammoth task so don’t be afraid to ask for help. Lean on loved ones when you need to rest.
  • Maintain a balanced diet. Ensure you are obtaining all the vital nutrients your body needs in your food and drink. And stay hydrated.
  • Do some light exercise. Listening to your doctors advice, avoid strenuous activity but walks can boost mood and energy whilst getting your body moving.
