What does the NHS say about Postpartum Recovery?

There are many parts of the body that need time to recover after childbirth. You may have had stitches, are experiencing heavy bleeding or are having bladder problems. It is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle with light exercise and making sure your body is getting enough nutrients but without pushing yourself too far.

It is also important to be drinking at least 2 litres of water a day, especially if breastfeeding, to stay hydrated and encourage the regular passing of urine.

Try and avoid getting constipated after birth as it causes strain on the pelvic floor muscles and stitches. A healthy diet ensuring you are obtaining all the vital nutrients and vitamins will help prevent this

What is postpartum hair loss?

During pregnancy the body experiences high amounts of oestrogen and progesterone.

The high levels of these hormones cause the hair to remain in an extended period of growth resulting in thicker hair.

Once your hormone levels drop after postpartum your hair starts to shed up to 400 strands a day.

By 6 months postpartum the hair loss rate should reduce to pre-pregnancy

Rosemary Leaf
Increases blood circulation, stimulating hair follicles which promotes hair growth. This plant extract also helps prevent premature greying
Nettle Leaf
Rich in silica and sulphur. This helps make hair shinier and healthier, it also helps protect the scalp against damage
Marigold Petals
Or Calendula, hydrates the scalp promoting hair growth, it has regenerative properties helping hair follicles grow, and fights bacterial and fungal infections that can cause balding

Self-Care Advice

After birth, of course your attention is primarily going to be on your new baby, however it is beneficial for not only you but also your newborn to take time for some self care and make sure your body is recovering properly.

  • Adhere to your doctors orders. Attend all follow up appointments and try and take things easy, they want you to recover as quickly and as best as possible
  • Rest. Wherever possible try and catch up on sleep
  • Accept help from family and friends. Looking after a new born whilst looking after yourself is a mammoth task so don’t be afraid to ask for help. Lean on loved ones when you need to rest
  • Maintain a balanced diet. Ensure you are obtaining all the vital nutrients your body needs in your food and drink. And stay hydrated
  • Do some light exercise. Listening to your doctors advice, avoid strenuous activity but walks can boost mood and energy whilst getting your body moving
