WHAT ARE STRETCH MARKS

Between 50 and 90 percent of women who are pregnant experience stretch marks during or after birth.

Stretch marks (striae) are streaks that appear on the abdomen, breasts, hips, buttocks or other places on the body. They're common in pregnant women, especially during the last trimester. Stretch marks are long, narrow streaks, stripes, or lines that develop on the skin. They occur when the skin is suddenly stretched and are extremely common.

The skin consists of three key layers. Stretch marks form in the dermis, or middle layer, when the connective tissue is stretched beyond the limits of its elasticity. This is normally due to rapid expansion or contraction of the skin.

As the body grows, the connecting fibres in the dermis slowly stretch to accommodate slow growth. However, rapid growth leads to sudden stretching. This causes the dermis to tear, allowing deeper layers of skin to show through, this can form stretch marks

And this is the reason for the pesky itchiness...As your bump grows, the skin of your tummy (abdomen) is stretched and this may also feel itchy

TOP TIPS FOR STRETCH MARKS

Stretch marks are common in pregnancy, but anyone can develop stretch marks in any phase of life. Some people are more susceptible to them. If your mom, dad, grandparents, or other blood relative has stretch marks, you’re more likely to get them. Even if you’re at increased risk of stretch marks, there are some things you can do to reduce your risk and treat the stretch marks you already have.

1. Stay hydrated -Drinking enough water may help keep your skin hydrated and soft. Soft skin doesn’t tend to develop stretch marks as much as dry skin does.

2. Massage the skin - Gently massage the product into your skin with your fingers, using a circular motion, for about 1 minute. There is suggestion that massage can help prevent stretch marks

3. Dry-brushing may decrease their likelihood. To dry brush, use a natural fibre brush or natural jute glove to gently massage a client’s arms, legs, and belly, using slow, circular motions. (Dry-brushing is not recommended on breast tissue.) Dry-brushing increases lymphatic drainage while also exfoliating skin. When followed up with deep hydration, dry brushing can improve the appearance of all blemishes, including stretch marks.

4. Try control your weight (Tough one we know!)One of the most helpful things you can do to prevent stretch marks, whether you’re pregnant or not, is to maintain a healthy weight. Stretch marks can happen when your skin pulls apart quickly due to rapid weight gain.

5. Eat a nutrient-rich diet -Eating foods that boost skin health may help.

6. Frequently moisturise

7. Dermatologists have recommended applying multiple products to the prone areas, which creates a layering effect. The result is more protection and hydration, recommending an oil and then a balm/butter
