What does the NHS say causes infertility?

If you are reading this and have experienced infertility or a miscarriage you are not alone.

Around 1 in 7 couples may have difficulty conceiving and in the UK an estimated 1 in 5 pregnancies ends in miscarriage

There are many possible causes of infertility, and infertility issues can affect both partners. However, in a quarter of cases, the cause cannot be identified.

The most common causes of infertility are:

  • Lack of regular ovulation (monthly release of eggs)
  • Poor semen quality
  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
  • Endometriosis – a condition in which tissue similar to the endometrium (endometrium) grows outside the uterus

The best herbs for Fertility and trying to conceive

Our blend is created by our qualified Herbalist which has been carefully formulated specifically for female fertility, we have used 7 of the finest organic botanical ingredients:

  • Spearmint leaf: helps to regulate hormones to create balance and aid fertility. Studies have shown that it can decrease testosterone while increasing luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and estradiol It has a soft mint flavour that is agreeable and pleasant to drink
  • Agnus Castus Berry: Chaste berry, also known as Monk’s pepper, increases progesterone production via increasing luteinizing hormone and prolactin. It reduces follicle stimulating hormone. This balances hormones that regulate menstruation and fertility, thus increasing fertility.
  • Shatavari Root: is a nourishing and rejuvenating female tonic. It helps to regulate hormonal imbalances and enhances fertility. It increases luteinizing hormones, improves ovulation, rejuvenates fertility, and enhances libido.
  • Nettle Leaf: is a remineraliser, rich in iron, calcium, and silica. It enhances ovum production by supporting FSH (follicle stimulating hormone), regulates hormones and helps to rid the body of toxic oestrogens.
  • Lady’s Mantle herb: is a uterine tonic and stimulates ovulation. It helps to regulate hormones and is traditionally used to promote fertility. It helps to tone the pelvic floor muscles and has a cooling and astringent effect.

Trying to get pregnant and maximising fertility advice

This can be an all-consuming and trying time of your life especially if you are not falling pregnant and can add stress and strain to your life. You feel you have become obsessive in peeing on sticks working out when you are ovulating and sex can become a mechanical procedure rather than an enjoyment – so do try to find a healthy balance with it all which is easy said than done.

Here are some advice points for you to research further.

If you are struggling pregnant or it is affecting your mental health, please go see the doctor and gain medical advice as sometimes there are underlying medical issues, ones that could be easily spotted and managed.

Here are some advice points to boost your fertility:

Have sex regularly: Couples who have sex every day or every other day have the highest pregnancy rates.

Get to know your cycle: Really understanding helps you know when you're most fertile. Ovulation is the best time to get pregnant

Have sex near the time of ovulation: If having sex every day isn't always possible...or enjoyable! Have sex every 2 days right after your period ends. This will help ensure that you have sex when you are most fertile.

Don't overdo strenuous exercise: Heavy, intense exercise lasting more than five hours per week has been associated with decreased ovulation.

Curb caffeine: We are a nation of tea and coffee lovers however; Studies show that consuming less than 200 milligrams of caffeine per day does not affect fertility. That's about 1-2 cups of 6-8 oz coffee a day.

Take your vitamins: The NHS recommends taking Vitamin D and folic acid. It's recommended that you take: 400 micrograms of folic acid every day – from before you're pregnant until you're 12 weeks pregnant. This is to reduce the risk of problems in the baby's development in the early weeks of pregnancy.

It is also recommended that you take a daily vitamin D supplement.

Live a healthy lifestyle and try to maintain a healthy weight: Overweight and underweight women are at increased risk of ovulation disorders so maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key for your pregnancy journey.

It goes without saying you should avoid smoking and alcohol and we don’t need to a scientist to work out that eating a nutritious and balanced diet pre-pregnancy is likely to increase your fertility and consuming a diet full of junk food and fast food probably won't be doing your fertility any favours.

Studies have shown a Mediterranean diet is known to keep your brain, heart and metabolism healthy. It has been linked to a lower risk of cancer and may even extend your life….and now better fertility and pregnancy outcomes has been added to the list! Also, its worth a shot if it potentially brings having that little bundle of joy in your arms quicker, plus the Mediterranean diet is not such a bad diet to adopt in life in general as its super delicious!

The main reason that the Mediterranean diet is so beneficial for almost any health condition is that it reduces inflammation in the body.

Chronic inflammation in the body can be caused by many things, like environment, exposure to toxins but one of the biggest culprits is diet. Diets high in saturated fat, refined sugars and red meat, and diets low in fruit, vegetables and fibre are all associated with menstrual irregularities, infertility and disease.

So, what are the people of the Med eating??

  • Minimal processed foods/ingredients
  • Foods high in polyphenols (chemicals found in plants)
  • Nourishing fats like olive oil and omega-3 fatty acids – found in fatty fish like salmon, walnuts, chia seeds and flax
  • Vibrant coloured fruits and vegetables like blueberries, oranges, spinach and purple cabbage.

A Mediterranean Diet is naturally rich in anti-inflammatory foods has been shown to increase the chances of conception, improve sperm health and even improve the results of assisted reproductive technology (ART).
